sluga-blue-sphere recap

download Rhythmicon’s set from the night, a sweet mix of garage, deeper dubs & UKFunky

Wow – a huge thanks to all who came out for Friday night’s amazing array of forward-future beats & bass. sub|division was a live as hell partry for three of the UK’s top notch underground producers & we were amped to be able to bring such amazing music to Lucky Bar’s dancefloor.

After a tasty opening set of garagey bass from Rhythmicon (downloadable above), Blue Daisy took to the stage with a gas mask & a surreal set of swirling psychedelic bass voyages. Heavy to say the least. Daisy’s energy on stage was palpable & he easily topped the night for most “out there” set. Crazy shit.

Illum Sphere rocked a morphing APC40  set of loops, basslines, textures & one-shots into a killer orgy of textural grit. Dropping “Titan” & even squeezing in Aphex Twin’s “Windowlicker”, Illum was killin um. There were moments of claustrophobic throbbing countered by some gnarly-ass dilla-worthy crunk. Fantastic.

And despite an upset stomach most of the evening, Slugabed still came through with the heat for the final set of the evening. That bit-ridden, globby neon funk was all over the dancefloor, capping off an amazing night of left-field dance funk that made the sub|div fam extremely happy. Ups to you too, Victoria – dancing all night top those crazy beats. Daps to BTS for the fly polaroids. Up next: Rifflandia 3!

FREE Slugabed EP of raw heat

Just in time for tomorrow’s huuuuuge gig with Slugabed, Illum Sphere & Blue Daisy, Slugabed himself drops a FREE EP of surging heat. “KNSDF” wields that slippery, loping crunk that we love, but it’s “Rhythm Of The Night” that steals the show (and a tasty sample to boot).

Super hyped for tomorrow’s night’s lineup of future-bass goodness. See y’all on the flo.

sub⎹div podcast 7.0: Michael Red

In honour of the glorious tour that he helped organize, Lighta! Sound’s Michael Red has thrown together a mix showcasing Slugabed, Illum Sphere, Blue Daisy, NastyNasty & MRed himself. Titled The Opposite Of Fear, it’s a dreamlike scape of angular riddims & loping funk – yep, that next level shit. From Blue Daisy’s psychedelic post-hop to the punishing grime of Slugabed’s bit-wrenched bass-onslaught to Red’s own spacial drum workouts, this is a deep mix that still facilitates a healthy portion of neck-snap. You can head over to Low Indigo to DL or link it below… Continue reading

Slugabed • Illum Sphere • Blue Daisy: Sept. 10

An absolutely monstrous show for sub⎸div this September… as if Rifflandia wasn’t enough, Sept. 10 will see some of the UK’s finest cutting edge producers gracing the sub⎸div stage. All three of these cats represent where the fam is steering toward;  the fringes of everything new & exciting.

Hath no fear – there will be bass here & plenty of it. But it will be delivered with a healthy dose of textural potency & loping rhythms, the type that make your neck snap the fuck off. Totally amped for the next level of future-funk to roll through… PEEP THE STREAMS BELOW.

Slugabed & Kuedo

Ugh, it’s been a minute, yikes was February craaazy. Anyway, as a testament to all the mind-bending jams being released at the moment, we’re gonna keep a steady roll of “CHECK THIS SHIT OUT” posts going cos hey, it’s the easiest way for y’all to get sneak peaks on what you’ll be hearing from the  sub⎪div soundsystem.

SO, mega props to Planet Mu for just keeping the heat coming. These two EPs have not left the HPs over the last few weeks, another testament to Mike Paradinas’ a&r-ing & vision. Slugabed; well, no clue what the deal with Greg Feldwick is, but the tunes are some neon-purple, post-Dilla glitch-dub that has some near-embarrassing head-nodding occurring on my busrides home. “Goulash” has a semi-carnival feel through its motif, but really guts you when it drops into some concrete jungle, doom-step. Clock it…

Slugabed “Pressure”

Kuedo is the newest project helmed by Jamie of Vex’d. Ah Vex’d… (sidenote: thanks go to Hrdvsion for putting me onto their pulverizing Degenerate… for those not in the know, Degenerate was a milestone in the then still-developing bass community, fusing grime, 2-step, dubstep & hardcore industrial breakscapes into a behemoth of a monster… but there’s a looming sense that peeps just don’t really know Vex’d – get on that y’all) Anyways, yeah, much akin to Slugabed, the Kuedo sound is illuminated by fizzing neon synth work & a healthy dose of the Dilla non-quantized beat programming that has revitalized instrumental hip-hop over the last few years. Plus bonus: mega fucking melodic.
