sub⎹div podcast 8.0: Longshanks

The latest instalment of the sub⎹div podcast comes from ol’ daddy Longshanks. LS has twisted his repertoire over the last year, stretching out past the house/disco axiom that fuels his Saturday night residency at Lucky Bar’s Solid! Taking inspiration from The Big Reds & Eames, LS has managed to push hard in a couple of areas; the 2step/UKF realm & the loping, post-hop digital crunk springing up everywhere. His sets before & after Gaslamp Killer at Rifflandia 3 were great displays of the versatile barrage of funk this cat is pushing atm with his crazy ass midi controller, the Ohm64.

The podcast is littered with fly-as-fuck burners; we’re imagining this is a great snapshot of what his upcoming headlining spot October 27 will sound like. Starting off with some purple weight courtesy of Terror Danjah & Ginz, the mix goes through a few left turns, morphing into some nasty head-nod funk. The latest gem from Ramadanman “Pitter” features & live staple Loops Haunt pops up here as well. Fresh burners from Arp101, Slugabed & Blackpocket sit snug alongside the ever looming spectre of Dilla & there are a couple of nifty acapella mashes in there (Phil Collins anyone?). Definitely one to snap your neck to. Words from the wiz…

Longshanks: “The tough thing lately is avoiding trying to cram too many styles in – I’m really respecting anyone who can rock thematically for any length & still keep shit popping. I was tempted to go 2step all the way, but honestly, there’s too much deep crunk around right now for me not to document the amazing world of 80-100 bpm. Cupp Cave, Loops Haunt & Pixelord are underrated as fuuuuck, so it was fun to mash those producers with classics like Dilla & local fire-breathers Megasoid & Jules Chaz .

The mix was done live in my living room, a collaboration between Ableton, my Ohm64 & a bottle of wine – pretty much what you get when I rock live. I wanted to avoid over-thinking it – there’s nothing crazy here, just some verbs, delays, grid chops & quick mixes. Messy in bits, but extremely fun to execute.”

sub⎹div podcast 7.0: Michael Red

In honour of the glorious tour that he helped organize, Lighta! Sound’s Michael Red has thrown together a mix showcasing Slugabed, Illum Sphere, Blue Daisy, NastyNasty & MRed himself. Titled The Opposite Of Fear, it’s a dreamlike scape of angular riddims & loping funk – yep, that next level shit. From Blue Daisy’s psychedelic post-hop to the punishing grime of Slugabed’s bit-wrenched bass-onslaught to Red’s own spacial drum workouts, this is a deep mix that still facilitates a healthy portion of neck-snap. You can head over to Low Indigo to DL or link it below… Continue reading

podcast 6.0: Frame

Our boy Frame hits us up with the perfect way to cap off the summer – a choice selection of irie digi-dub. The earthy, grounded pillar of The Big Reds properly exemplifies the depth that the roots-fi lineage of dubstep feeds on. Burners from RSD & action from Synkro are featured.

sub⎹div q&a & podcast 5.0: The Librarian

header image by Matt Walker
July 23-26 in Squamish, BC will be some fierce-ass good times. Amidst the myriad of summer fests, Bass Coast has our vote for the underdog with some serious appeal. Put together by, you guessed it, The Bass Coast Girls, the gathering is a mesh of music, art, dance, games & all round hedonistic sun-drenched fun.

The lineup is bangin: Megasoid, Max Ulis, Hrdvsion, Djunya, Michael Red, Mat The Alien… and your homeboy Eames will be all up in there pumping that UKFunky yo. We caught up with The Librarian aka Andrea Graham for our latest podcast, plus she managed to answer some of our questions as well… DL & interview after the jump yo… Continue reading

sub⎹div podcast 4.0: Rhythmicon

Let’s just come out with it: Gobe’s recent departure for the great white north has left The Big Reds slightly splintered (although we’re all counting on some amazing reunion gigs at some point later this year ;) ). Nevertheless, all three members are taking this hiatus as an opportunity to develop their individual skills, styles & image. Case in point, the latest podcast from Rhythmicon. Whether alongside his fellow Big Reds (Gobe & Frame) or playing a solo set, Rhythmicon has always been a steady mixer of head-wise tech stylings & dancefloor heaters. A malleable DJ, the newest sub⎹div podcast sees Rhythmicon project a sleek, streamlined version of underground bass music; 2step slink, UKFunky & cavernous dub all interact here, rounded out with one of the most fitting desserts in existence: classic Photek. Words from da healer…

Rhythmicon: “When creating a mixset, I try to find a theme, then collect a pallette of tracks that fit into that vibe. My goal is to put something together that you can listen to, put away, then come back to a while later and still be able to connect to that original sound. In this case, I think there’s a coastal influence coming through; lots of rainforest atmosphere, melow pads, and intricate percussion. I wanted to include a spectrum of styles, so there’s hints of dub, future garage, breaks, jungle & UK funky. I hope you enjoy listening.” Download & tracklist after the jump… Continue reading

SubLowOneBloc via Gobe…

Our man Gobe left for the far north with the love of his life, but he ain’t stopped pushing weight! And here’s the evidence. SLOB or SubLowOneBloc – a new podcast series from Gobe himself exploring techno, house, UKFunky & of course a good helping of bassweight tunage.

Get all up in its guts… DL & tracklisting after the jumpy… Continue reading

sub⎹div podcast 3.0: Hrdvsion (plus Q&A!)

The latest instalment of the sub⎹div podcast comes courtesy of Victoria’s finest: Hrdvsion aka Nathan Jonson. Those who saw Skream in Victoria last September likely caught Jonson opening with his amazing set of live original techno throbbings. Combining glitchy sound aesthetics with an amazing knack for bringing the weird funk, Hrdvsion straddles the blurry line between schizoid post-idm adventures & sleek techno dancefloor smashers.

Hrdvsion “Cause I Love You” from Where Did You Just Go? forthcoming on Wagon Repair

Jonson’s lengthy catalog of leftfield post-idm techno is well known to many West Coast electronic fans, but in 2009, Jonson took his musical maelstrom to Berlin, for obvious reasons. After a healthy year of touring & writing, this May sees the release of Where Did You Just Go?, Hrdvsion’s first full length on Wagon Repair (the techno label co-run by his older brother Mathew). Already receiving spins from the likes of Martyn, Erol Alkan & John Tejada, Jonson is primed for a killer 2010. His sub|div podcast is  the type of mix you’d expect from Hrdvsion; classic acid, leftfield bass music, a BC banger & a brand new tune from his upcoming record. We had a chat with him through the ether – peep the Q&A, plus the DL after the jump… Continue reading

sub⎹div podcast 2.2: Gobe [Mar. 2010]

To keep the extended Gobe farewell going, here’s the second installment of his sub|div podcast (peep the first half of Gobe’s podcast here). Big ups to all who came out to Hush this past Thursday for Theory – The Big Reds were on fiiiyaah kid. Big tunes dropped & a great energy. Here’s Gobe’s synopsis… Continue reading

sub|div podcast 2.1: Gobe [Feb. 2010]

Truth be told, the sub|div soundsystem was busy through February with hella shows, so we’ll give Gobe a break for getting the second podcast in a bit late. For those that don’t know, Gobe is leaving Victoria for the far North of BC at the end of April to pursue life, love & work. The sub|div fam will miss Ben & we’re dreading losing him, but before he leaves, he’s gonna unload a couple of sick mixes & we’re gonna have a huge sub|div party on April 16th, which will feature all sub|div residents.

sub|div podcast 01: Eames [Jan. 2010]

Amped to bring y’all the first installment of the sub|div podcast! 01 comes live & direct from Eames, who’s been quietly honing this sick meshing of techno, 2step & UK Funky that has people going for it on the D-FLO. Hotly-tipped Greena is featured here along with UKF mammoth Roska, Click Box, Instra:mental & pretty much everyone’s current fave, Joy Orbison (am I wrong?). A few words from the selektaaahh… after the jump
