SPKRBRZR curating Catalog Gallery in Vancity

The homie Speakerbruiser Rob aka Megasoid has a new baby to be proud of – Catalog Gallery is located at 100-56 Powell St. in the gastown area of Vancouver. Their goal?

“Catalog’s mandate is to program theme-driven shows that highlight Vancouver’s creative community & place place it firmly in the global conversation of art…”

Nice. The gallery opened its doors with Postulate Dimentia - a collection of renaissance-inspired oilstick on large-wood-canvasses & some limited edition prints from The Dark.

If you’re around, pop in & check it.

The Dark’s ‘Postulate Dementia’ exhibition. The show is a collection of renaissance-inspired oilstick on large-wood-canvasses and some limited edition prints that we feel marks a new era in work by The Dark.

Rifflandia: Friday recap

The Motherfucking Gaslamp Killer & LongWalkShortDock @ Rifflandia 3

Well, that was fuuuun. A HUUUUUGE shout out to Atomique/Rifflandia HQ for a monumental weekend of diverse music. The third installment of Rifflandia proved that even a city the size of Victoria can have a healthy, sold-out, many-faceted festival that satisfies across many demographics. Punk, indie-rock, Canadiana, dubstep, techno, hip-hop… man, everything was represented at the festival this year.

This year the sub⎹division fam was given the opportunity to curate our homestead venue – Lucky Bar – and needless to say, the programming was a great success. Our goal was a broad spectrum of dance-worthy sounds & so far the feedback has indicated that we hit the nail on the head.

Friday night’s lineup was a steady progression; openers Eames & Fatso got their Soft Wear on – smoother house & deeper 4/4 vibes were a great way to start the weekend. Their Soft Wear project is likely to turn out a few bangers over the next 6 months – stay tuned. The big homie Rob Speakerbruiser aka Megasoid stepped up next. If there is a new official member of the sub⎹div fam it’s this cat. Mega love & support has been mutual between our parties & man did he ever wax the joint with his fresh new iPad set up. Bye bye MPD – Rob’s self-styled interface on the iPad allowed him modular access to numerous elements – be it cracking hip-hop drums, acapellas or full lazer-disco jams – all of which combined to form a hip-gyrating mob of sweaty folk, preparing them for…

LongWalkShortDock. Dave LWSD is an absolute gentleman & the sub⎹div fam were stoked to finally be able to link with this in-demand regional sensation. Most of y’all know the deal – LWSD is a beast live & his set was on point; loud, LFO-ridden bangers, with a peppering of vox & a whole load of headbangin. Fly Yo.

Egyptrixx “Everybody Bleeding”

Toronto’s Dave Psutka aka Egyptrixx is still being discovered in his homeland, despite his success in the UK & EU. Signed to Night Slugs, Egyptrixx wields a truly unique take on the house/techno axiom. Mid-range fuckery is his signature & truth be told, dude’s live sound is like aliens beaming themselves inside of a bunch of Kompakt clippers. Serious left-field sound shapes inside of some brilliant grooves – hats off to a fantastic show & an amazing Friday night…

Megasoid/Vincent Parker recap & photos

BOOM. Straight up – THANKS TO ALL WHO CAME OUT  LAST FRIDAY & MADE SHIT POP OFF! “That’s what I’m talkin’ about!”

sub⎸div 04 was a massive success; after a heavy set of dubstep headliners at sub⎸div events, it was fresh to have some glitchy, lazered-up acts through to liven up what was definitely the craziest sub⎸division yet. Fantastic opening jams from Eames (love that Todd Edwards kid!) & The Big Reds (“Hype The Funk” seriously damages!) warmed everyone up for Vincent Parker’s frenetic, spastic live glitch-funk madness. Playing new, unheard jams along with selections from his Prism Myst EP, the Run Rioter was in fine form & sucked the thick crowd into a vortex of electro-crunk boogie. Fantastic visuals from Vincent’s homie Robyn made his set completely pop. Continue reading

sub|division Q&A: Megasoid/Speakerbruiser Rob

The ascension of leftfield beat music in parallel to the surging might of dubstep over the last couple of years has many excited about the possibilities of what they will hear in a club on a night out. As a respite from remixes of the same ol’ top 40 tunes & electro’s maximalist abandon, glitch-hop, dubstep & a revitalized garage/2step scene are keeping things fresh & making it all feel new again. Producers like Joker, Joy Orbison, Rustie, Nosaj Thing & FaltyDL (just to name a few) are keeping buns moving with hefty bass-weight & attention to production detail that is at the very least, giving those who like to dance some new exciting options.

Eazy-E & MC Ren “The Muthaphukkin Real [Megasoid Remix]“

Ol’ Dirty Bastard “Shimmy Shimmy Ya [Megasoid Remix]“

In Canada, Megasoid has been at the forefront of this scene/movement about as long as it’s been breathing. Helmed by Speakerbruiser Rob (formerly known as Halifax indie-hop legend Sixtoo) along with his pal Hadji (of Wolf Parade fame), Megasoid was throwing parties exposing people to artists like Hudson Mohawke, Lazersword & Nosaj Thing before most people even knew who Flying Lotus was.
