Jus Wan ‘Miles Away’

A little bitter-sweet on this one – San Fran bass-pusher Jus Wan has just announced that he’s packing it in musically. Along with DJG, Jus Wan has fought the good fight on the West Coast, pursuing the sonics that enrich the dub/step/techno axiom. In particular, “Action Potential”, his debut 12″ on Appleblim’s Apple Pips imprint, is a tasty 2step/techno gem.

Sonic Router posted a quick interview with the man – sayonara.

sub⎹div podcast 8.0: Longshanks

The latest instalment of the sub⎹div podcast comes from ol’ daddy Longshanks. LS has twisted his repertoire over the last year, stretching out past the house/disco axiom that fuels his Saturday night residency at Lucky Bar’s Solid! Taking inspiration from The Big Reds & Eames, LS has managed to push hard in a couple of areas; the 2step/UKF realm & the loping, post-hop digital crunk springing up everywhere. His sets before & after Gaslamp Killer at Rifflandia 3 were great displays of the versatile barrage of funk this cat is pushing atm with his crazy ass midi controller, the Ohm64.

The podcast is littered with fly-as-fuck burners; we’re imagining this is a great snapshot of what his upcoming headlining spot October 27 will sound like. Starting off with some purple weight courtesy of Terror Danjah & Ginz, the mix goes through a few left turns, morphing into some nasty head-nod funk. The latest gem from Ramadanman “Pitter” features & live staple Loops Haunt pops up here as well. Fresh burners from Arp101, Slugabed & Blackpocket sit snug alongside the ever looming spectre of Dilla & there are a couple of nifty acapella mashes in there (Phil Collins anyone?). Definitely one to snap your neck to. Words from the wiz…

Longshanks: “The tough thing lately is avoiding trying to cram too many styles in – I’m really respecting anyone who can rock thematically for any length & still keep shit popping. I was tempted to go 2step all the way, but honestly, there’s too much deep crunk around right now for me not to document the amazing world of 80-100 bpm. Cupp Cave, Loops Haunt & Pixelord are underrated as fuuuuck, so it was fun to mash those producers with classics like Dilla & local fire-breathers Megasoid & Jules Chaz .

The mix was done live in my living room, a collaboration between Ableton, my Ohm64 & a bottle of wine – pretty much what you get when I rock live. I wanted to avoid over-thinking it – there’s nothing crazy here, just some verbs, delays, grid chops & quick mixes. Messy in bits, but extremely fun to execute.”

Rhythmicon’s set opening for Mount Kimbie

download Rhythmicon’s set opening for Mount Kimbie @ Rifflania 3

Rhythmicon has had an amazing summer. Despite The Big Reds being split up by life’s myriad paths, the homie has gigged like a motherfucker, ripping opening slots for Zed’s Dead & 16Bit among others.

At Rifflandia 3, dude also opened for, er, MOUNT KIMBIE. Now, MK’s show was a bit of a letdown – the Riff3 performance was their first on North American soil & thus, they were unprepared for the EU/NA power conversion, meaning they could only generate about “half” of their set. Yes, it was painful seeing the dudes frustrated, even though their neutered set still sounded deep & cool as fuck.

Anyway, earlier that night, Rhythmicon laced this slick mix of moodier, paced tunes. Some stellar moments on here… Pangaea’s “Router” & Eskmo’s “Cloudlight” both shine. Another fine mix from the crew…

Rhythmicon: ”When I was asked to play a set of downtempo ‘I wouldn’t normally play’ at Alix Goolden Hall for Victoria’s Rifflandia Festival, I was grateful for the opportunity to perform in a style I would usually be unable to share with a live audience. As the venue is a church sanctuary turned music conservatory & performance hall, I tried to select work that made unique use of space & verb; music that I thought would be interesting to hear in a room with such powerful acoustics. There’s definitely an influence of the shift into autumn, deep and atmospheric after a dark & wet September.”

DJG ‘voids’

The truth from San Fran pusher DJG. Voids is split into two parts, six tracks each encompassing the deeper side of this thing we love called bass. Some serious floor-movers here, plus some ethereal ambient epicness.

DJG will be in Victoria next month at Theory Thursdays – here’s the Facebook event. Do not sleep on the good people at Hush who put in the work to keep things happening there.

FREE Slugabed EP of raw heat

Just in time for tomorrow’s huuuuuge gig with Slugabed, Illum Sphere & Blue Daisy, Slugabed himself drops a FREE EP of surging heat. “KNSDF” wields that slippery, loping crunk that we love, but it’s “Rhythm Of The Night” that steals the show (and a tasty sample to boot).

Super hyped for tomorrow’s night’s lineup of future-bass goodness. See y’all on the flo.

sub⎹div podcast 7.0: Michael Red

In honour of the glorious tour that he helped organize, Lighta! Sound’s Michael Red has thrown together a mix showcasing Slugabed, Illum Sphere, Blue Daisy, NastyNasty & MRed himself. Titled The Opposite Of Fear, it’s a dreamlike scape of angular riddims & loping funk – yep, that next level shit. From Blue Daisy’s psychedelic post-hop to the punishing grime of Slugabed’s bit-wrenched bass-onslaught to Red’s own spacial drum workouts, this is a deep mix that still facilitates a healthy portion of neck-snap. You can head over to Low Indigo to DL or link it below… Continue reading
