sub│div soundsystem (Gobe’s Farwell Party)
The Big Reds, Eames & Longshanks
Jeeeah. sub⎹div 05 was an absolute throw down people. So much love up in Lucky Bar on this night, thank you all SO MUCH! It was great to see all the heads out to bid Ben Gobe farewell, huge hearts & huge basslines all night. 05 was Longshanks’ first time performing at a sub⎹div – he’s usually the chaperone – but his rotation of tunes from Slugabed, Joy Orbison, Om Unit, Kuedo & Dilla Dilla Dilla warmed things up nice for Eames… and MAN, he upped the ante quickly with his sick set proving again that there is nobody repping cutting edge UK stylez like Eames right now. Eames incorporated the purist clip of Tensnake & Efdemin with the hefty subs of Kode9, SBTRKT & Roska toinstant dance floor delight.

And then we come to THE BIG REDS. What can be said about their send off set? With MC Natureboy in the house (UPS HORATIO!), shit was sure to pop off & crikey, the gingers delivered. Their set was nothing short of chest-caving – so many huuuuge tunes dropped, mixed seamlessly, executed perfectly. It was a solid reminder of what these cats have done over the last 3 years in the capital city – and how much skill is present when these 3 step to the decks together. Digi-dub, hefty wobblers, 2-step, cavernous drops, minimal sub-slaying monsters & drum-&-fucking-bass… The Big Reds are so much more than just “dubstep DJs”; they rep the entire spectrum of low-end vibrations & that’s what made sub⎹div 05 such a sick affair. Sure enough, Gobe will be missed, but Frame & Rhythmicon will be repping hard together. And I’m sure we’ll sneak some surprise Big Reds reunion gigs later on this year… fingers crossed.

Megasoid (Turbo Crunk – Mtl./Van.)
Vincent Parker (Run Riot Records – Vancouver)
with Eames & The Big Reds
Well, after a heavy set of dubstep headliners at sub⎸div events, it was fresh to have some glitchy, lazered-up acts through to liven up what was definitely the craziest sub⎸division yet. Fantastic opening jams from Eames (love that Todd Edwards kid!) & The Big Reds (“Hype The Funk” seriously damages!) warmed everyone up for Vincent Parker’s frenetic, spastic live glitch-funk madness. Playing new, unheard jams along with selections from his Prism Myst EP, the Run Rioter was in fine form & sucked the thick crowd into a vortex of electro-crunk boogie.
An evening coolin with Megasoid’s Speakerbruiser Rob was a nice preamble to what was an amazing set of diverse, club-ready fire. The first half of Rob’s set consisted of Megasoid jams, some old, but mostly new, unheard blazers that got the capacity crowd sexified. A brand new heater with Guilty Simpson on vox tore the shit out of the dancefloor – fresh to death. The tail end of the evening saw the Megasoid machine traverse funk, disco & housier jams; Siriusmo’s “High Together” slayed in & amongst a barrage of jams that made the line outside Lucky envious as hell.
A MEGAFUN night – expect Megasoid & Vincent Parker back in Vic before 2010 is done.

2562 (Tectonic, Subsolo, 3024 – Netherlands)
with Eames & The Big Reds
Tis a shame that this amazing gig fell on the same night as Rusko (performing about 100 ft down the road) – in a town the size of Victoria, there really are only so many bassheads; many thanks to those that did show up to catch one of the tightest sets to grace Victoria’s ears. 2562 dropped a great set that wandered from deep sub-crushers like his own “Dinosaur” & “Flashback”, through to the hammering workout of a new Untold dub & Modeselektor’s relentless remix of Headhunter’s “Prototype”.

Max Ulis (Lighta! Sound, Sub Osc – Vancouver)
with Eames & The Big Reds
Max Ulis’ performance at sub⎸division 02 was a veritable bass-music clinic; deep steppers, hefty bangers, dancehall, motherfucking grime, 2steppy shufflers. Seriously, an amazing night (especially considering it was a measly Tuesday). Moments that jump to mind are the immense groove of Modeslektor’s remix of “Prototype” by Headhunter. And who can forget “Tron”, the Joker tune that everyone is waiting for the official release of. The dancehall toward the end wrapped things up sweet. And the encore with “Listen Here”… yikes, an amazing night.
Big ups to The Big Reds for the slick, stellar opening salvo (ups to Gobe for dropping Longshanks’ new remix!) & ups to Eames for a smooth set of tribal/UK Funky – that Joy Orbison remix was siiiiiiiiick.

Daega Sound DJ Set (Lighta! Sound – Vancouver)
with Eames & The Big Reds
The first subⅼdivision was a huge success. A massive thanks to all who came out & showed support to this new & important Victoria monthly gathering. The opening sets did the trick, from the roots-fi dub & tech-step intensity from The Big Reds, all the way to the mash of glitch & techno that Eames spat out after them. Huge ups to Rhythmicon for dropping Emalkay’s new remix of Faithless’ “You’re A Sun”. Bound to be a HUGE TUNE.
And Daega. What can be said? Big ups to Ben & Josh for taking the crowd deep into the heart of bass – this was not a pandering set in any way. Tunes from Bar9, Pinch & others meshed seamlessly with Daega’s own dubs & the dancefloor was packed all night. Huge ups to the crowd.
